Neurodiversity & ADHD Counselling Nottingham

Neurodiversity & ADHD Counselling in Nottingham

If you are looking for neurodiversity or ADHD counselling in Nottingham, I am Elaine Bond, a UKCP registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor based in Carlton, Nottingham.

I provide individual counselling and psychotherapy for neurodivergent adults aged 18 and over, with face-to-face sessions available from my private counselling room in Carlton as well as online and remotely.

I also have lived experience of receiving a later diagnosis of ADHD and understand that navigating life as a neurodivergent adult can bring experiences and challenges that are not always recognised or understood by others.

Neurodiversity & counselling

Neurodiversity recognises that people can experience, process and respond to the world in different ways.

Counselling with me is not about trying to make you fit a particular idea of how you should think, feel or behave. Instead, we can explore your individual experiences, difficulties, strengths and needs in a way that makes sense for you.

Some of the areas neurodivergent clients may choose to explore in counselling include:

  • Anxiety and feeling overwhelmed
  • Masking
  • Late diagnosis and understanding yourself differently
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Shame and self-criticism
  • Relationships and communication
  • Boundaries
  • Work-related difficulties
  • Recognising and communicating your needs
  • Past experiences and their impact in the present

ADHD counselling for adults

I have personal experience of receiving a later diagnosis of ADHD and understand how discovering that you are neurodivergent later in life can lead to looking at past experiences from a different perspective.

You may begin to question why particular situations have been difficult, why you have developed certain ways of coping or how trying to meet other people's expectations has affected you.

Counselling can provide a confidential space to explore these experiences without judgement.

Masking, anxiety & overwhelm

Some neurodivergent adults spend a great deal of time trying to adapt their behaviour in order to fit expectations at work, within relationships or in social situations.

This is sometimes described as masking and, for some people, it can be associated with anxiety, exhaustion, shame or feeling that they cannot fully be themselves.

Our work may involve exploring these patterns, understanding what contributes to them and considering how your needs can be recognised and communicated more effectively.

Neurodiversity & relationships

Neurodiversity can also be relevant to the way we experience relationships, communication, emotions and boundaries.

Individual counselling can provide an opportunity to explore relationship patterns, misunderstandings, expectations, conflict and ways of communicating your needs.

I provide individual counselling for adults rather than couples therapy.

My approach

I work in a humanistic and relational way and adapt counselling to each individual rather than expecting one approach to work for everyone.

I will listen first and work collaboratively with you to understand what is happening in your life and what you would like from counselling.

Where appropriate, I may also draw upon approaches and techniques including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

You can find out more about my professional experience, qualifications and approach on my About Elaine Bond page.
